Jack LaLanne's Power Juicer sits, well-used, on the island in my kitchen. I just can't imagine life without it.

My juicing lifestyle began with a smaller juicer that required lots of slicing and dicing of the fruits and vegetables to be juiced. Eventually, I decided I wanted to upgrade to a juicer that required a short amount of time cutting up nature's fine foods when preparing to juice. I also wanted a juicer powerful enough to extract just about all of the juice from the fruits and vegetables to give my body maximum nutritional benefits.

With less powerful juicers, so much of the juice doesn't make its way to one's glass. However, thanks to the patented extraction technology with Jack LaLanne's Power Juicer, 30% more juice – using the same amount of fruit – fills a glass when compared to less advanced juicers on the market. With my former juicer, I would re-juice the pulp as a way of squeezing out the extra juice left in it. I'm in and out of the kitchen a lot faster these days.

Since carrot/apple juice is the juice I make the most, I envisioned a process that would require me to simply rinse the organic carrots and apples, break the large carrots in half, remove the stems from the apples, and then pop them into the juicer for a large dose of instant vitamins. Jack LaLanne's Power Juicer turned my dream into a reality. Once I started using it, the time I took to juice was significantly reduced. If the apples were too large to fit the chute on the juicer, I simply had to cut them in half as opposed to cutting them into many small pieces.

One of my favorite parts of Jack LaLanne's Power Juicer is the blue bin that attaches to the back of it – a container that collects the pulp as the juice is being extracted from the foods. Prior to juicing, I line the bin with a small plastic bag which helps make clean-up a breeze. The collected pulp can be used in many ways: to make salads, smoothies, soups, pies, casseroles, muffins, breads, or compost for soil, to name a few. On those days that the pulp serves no purpose, the bag in the bin can simply be tied and discarded.

Since some pulp also collects in other parts of the juicer, my biggest cleaning tip about Jack LaLanne's Power Juicer is to rinse those parts immediately after juicing to avoid the juicer from getting stained. It's real simple to disassemble the surgical stainless steel blade and connecting parts for cleaning, and to reassemble for later use.

Another big plus of this juicer is that its high output motor is so quiet when the juicer is in session – especially compared to the juicer I used prior to being blessed with this one. One day, when feeding the food into the juicer, Jack LaLanne's Power Juicer made no sound at all. I was about to be devastated, thinking my juicer would be out of commission for a while. However, turns out, since I was making juices for several people that day, the areas of the juicer that collect the pulp became full a lot quicker and simply needed to be emptied. It was the juicer's way to telling me: “Get that pulp out of here!” Once I did that, the juicer ran like new again.

I've heard there are more powerful juicers on the market, but since I'm so satisfied with the one I have, I've had no need to extensively research other juicers or upgrade to a more powerful one. I'm truly content. Jack LaLanne's Power Juicer has all the power I need right now; plus, its mere presence in my kitchen seems to transmit a special type of energy that I like – sometimes I feel healthy simply walking by it and noticing its permanent home on my kitchen counter. My son's friends gravitate to it, too, often asking for one of my tasty, homemade juices.

One of my most memorable juicing experiences with Jack LaLanne's Power Juicer recently took place in my son's classroom. That day, I carefully transported the juicer to his school and assisted the fourth-graders with juicing apple juice, carrot/apple juice, and apple/orange juice (my son's favorite juice combination). One fourth-grader went home that day and told her mom that she wanted a juicer of her own and that she only wanted to eat organic apples from now on. “Don't you feel all the wax on this apple, Mom?” she said to her mother, holding up a non-organic apple. “That's not good,” she explained.

This student and the majority of the fourth graders were fascinated by the gushes of juice that poured out of the juicer. One second they saw the whole fruit or veggie, and then a second or two later, they saw lots of liquid pouring out of those foods. “Cool,” and “Wow,” and “I want one of those,” were some of the comments I heard during our juicing adventure. One student even stated how lucky he thought my son was to have that juicer in his home.

Initially, I was planning to spend only about 45 minutes juicing with the students, but because of how intrigued they were with Jack LaLanne's Power Juicer, our juicing time lasted well over an hour. The fourth-grade teacher was highly impressed, too. The parents of the students came close to buying one for her as an end-of-school gift for her and her family

By the way, a friend of mine told me about a teacher who keeps Jack LaLanne's Power Juicer in her classroom to promote healthy eating to her students. I think that's an outstanding idea.

A booklet – Secrets of Power Juicing – comes with Jack LaLanne's Power Juicer. It includes information such as the benefits of juicing, tips to remember when using the juicer, and several delicious juice recipes ranging from Fresh Carrot Juice to Fresh Pineapple & Carrot Juice to Fresh Country Lemonade to Fresh Pear & Grape Juice, and many more.

This juicer costs about $100 although that price may vary depending on where you are shopping for it. My husband feels that the $100 he spent on the one for our home was worth every penny considering how much I use it and rave about it.

It may be worth giving the online offer below a try – under Additional Resources. The offer requires you to complete a survey to receive Jack LaLanne's Power Juicer for free. If you get that juicer, I wish you every bit of happiness and ultimate health with it.

Without it, life might not be as healthy and sweet and fun for me.

Is Your Kitchen a Safe Place?

February 10th, 2010 by bulirsa in Best Kitchen Appliances · No Comments

The time it will take to clean your kitchen cabinets will depend on how long it has been since you last cleaned them. Grime and grease builds fastest around the handle and knobs of your kitchen cabinets. You should clean the inside and outside of your kitchen cabinets. Make sure to clean your kitchen cabinets with a sponge. Don't use a scouring pad, it will scratch you cabinet's finish. Before using any cleaning product, read the back label to make sure it can be used for your cleaning project. Test the inside of your cabinet with the product you have chosen. This will make sure it is safe, and won't damage the finish.

Remove all dishes and products from your kitchen cabinets. Place these items on the counter or a table. Take your cleaner, and wipe any spills and crumbs that are on the inside of your kitchen cabinets. This would be a good time to line your shelves with new shelve paper. Place an opened box of baking soda inside the cabinets to keep them smelling fresh.

Take your cleaner, and wash and wipe the back of each kitchen door. Then wash and clean the front of each kitchen door. If there is a thick buildup, spray your kitchen doors with cleaner, and leave on for about 15 minutes. Wipe clean with a damp sponge. Spray and wash all hardware and handles on each kitchen door.

Put items back into the kitchen cabinets. Make sure all caps on bottles are tight, and wiped clean. Dust and wipe any dishes or bottles before putting them back in the cupboards. Doing these steps will help ensure your newly cleaned cabinets stay clean.

You can make your own cleaners to clean your kitchen cabinets. You can use a mild dish soap. Dawn detergent is a great choice, because it is a grease cleaner. In a pail, mix one part soap, and two parts warm water. Vinegar is an all-natural cleaner. In a pail, mix half vinegar, and half water. These cleaners will remove the buildup of grease and grime on your kitchen cabinets.

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is a great product to use for removing grease and grime from your kitchen cabinets. It is water-activated, and so powerful that each swipe removes more grime that the leading all-purpose cleaner. This magic eraser is also chemical free. This product can be purchased at your local grocery store. For more information go to www.mrclean.com.

Simple Green is another great choice for cleaning your kitchen cabinets. It is a cleanser and degreaser. This product is environmentally sensitive, and non-toxic. A 24 ounce bottle cost $5.99. For more information go to www.simplegreen.com.

These cleaning products are also great for cleaning floors, counter tops, refrigerators, and stoves. For more information go to www.doityourself.com.

Cash for Kitchen Clunkers: Cash for Old Appliances Encourages Switch to Energy Efficient Living

February 8th, 2010 by bulirsa in Best Kitchen Appliances · No Comments

People are looking into saving energy, and tossing out the old and in with the new. According to Energy Star, there are appliances that can replace the old energy hogs, that will help cut back on that electric bill, and are green. The cost of an Energy Star model, will be more expensive, but you will save “10 to 50% less energy and water then standard models” according to the Energy Star website. What you have to look for is, the Energy Star Yellow label, which will tell you the estimated amount of energy the appliance uses. This sticker will also let you know the low end usage and high end usage of similar models. Keep in mind that energy usage also depends on your local utility company rates, and your source of energy, such as electric or wind power.

My spouse and I are looking into replacing our refrigerator, we went to my local home improvement store, which is one place where you can buy Energy Star appliances, you can also find them at any Sears, Lowes, and other appliance outlet stores. Energy Star appliances, are found basically in the refrigerator, dishwashers, and freezers. There is no energy star rating on microwaves, or electric stoves, as I was told by the salesman. In looking at several makes, sizes, and models, there is an energy star appliance available for people in the price range of $440 on up to $2000. Here is what I found.

Hotpoint Refrigerator 18.2 Cu Ft.- $499.00

This model number is HTS18GBSWW. This model is your standard top freezer bottom refrigerator. The temperature controls are nicely positioned at the front, it offers adjustable glass shelves, door storage for milk, a can storage for your colas, standard crisper drawer for vegetables, and the plus option is, a condenser coil which is encased for never having to clean them. According to the Energy Star Label, this appliance uses 480 kWh, cost per year to operate $44.00.

Maytag 21 Cu Ft Refrigerator.- $699.00

This model number is MTF2142EEW.This model is your standard top freezer/bottom refrigerator. It offers a little more, hence the increase in price such as: easier to clean split adjustable shelves, with spill catcher. The spill catcher contains the spills as so it the liquid does not go onto food on the shelves below. This model has a ice maker installed, and has 2 crisper drawers. The Energy Star Label rated this model at 416, using $44.00 a year to operate.

LG 27 Cu Ft Refrigerator-$1349.00

This model number is LSC27931ST. Being a higher end make and model, this refrigerator offers allot of nice options. This model is a side by side unit. It comes with a tall water dispenser, space saving ice maker in the freezer, hidden hinges, 3 spill protector glass shelves, 5 freezer shelving, freezer door bins, and is very spacious. The outside it is equipped with a LED display for temperature room adjustment, child lock, and even water filter status. The Energy Star rating on this model is 590.

Dishwashers:

Americana Built In Dishwasher- $199.00

This model number is ADW1100NBB. This is a basic dishwasher you may find in many rentals or apartments. It is a 1 cycle dishwasher with a 4 level power scrub system. It also has a 100% water filtration system. Being a lower priced model, the quality is also lower. The door is not as sturdy, I felt when open and closing it several times. But if your on a tight budget and want a dishwasher, it is suitable. The Energy Star rating on this model is 337 kWh.

Maytag Jet clean Built in Tall tub Steam Clean Dishwasher- $629.00

This model number is MDBH980AWS. This model was nice. It has allot of options like a stainless steel tub, steam clean, sanitize, Hi-Temperature wash, time delay start, and touch control pads. The workmanship on this model is very impressive. Open and closing the door several times, you can feel the quality of the machine. The Energy Star label rated this unit at 312, with total usage per year estimated at $34.00.

LG Tall Tub Dishwasher- $699.00

This model number is LDF6920ST. This model is nice. It has a large stainless steel tub, with a built in food dispenser. I liked the hidden control panel, which you can not see with door shut, just leaving a clean outside display. Besides having a Lo-Decibel Quiet system on board, it is equipped with a hybrid condensing drying system for faster dry, and better energy savings. It also has a delay start , 4 wash cycles, and the unit has 3 spray arms. It is very sleek and would accent anyones kitchen. Again, the quality of the workmanship is exceptional. The Energy Star label rated this unit at 308 kWh, with total usage per year at $38.00

Keep in mind, that energy is going to vary according to size, and features. The salesman at the home improvement store, helped me pick these appliances, according to price, and the energy used. I used the lower end models, as well as the higher end models, simply because not every one is in the position to go out and spend allot of money. There is an Energy Star range hood that is made by Broan. I could not find any in the store to actually evaluate or to ask questions about. But they can be found at www.Broan.com . For people in all monetary situations, and budgets, you can purchase a energy efficient appliance. Remember to recycle your old appliance as well. On the Energy Star website, there is a link to possible rebates offered on purchasing Energy Star applicances.

February 8th, 2010 by bulirsa in Best Kitchen Appliances · No Comments

Washer and dryer sets don't have to be white! Manufacturers of washers and dryers are catching on to the fact that some customers prefer a bit of color, and diversifying their ranges. Red is a color that can add quirkiness and character to your laundry room or kitchen. The multi-color trend in appliances is one that has long been popular in Europe. For instance, manufacturers of stoves and ovens produce them in bright colors such as red, blue and green. Unsurprisingly, customers are enjoying expressing a similar sense of fun in purchasing their washers and dryers in America. Here are five red washer and dryer sets to liven up your home.

Maytag sells one consumer washer in the color Crimson. The Maytag Performance Series Front Load Washer has a capacity of 4 cubic feet and is sold for $1199. Among its features is a sanitation cycle that eliminates 99.9% of household bacteria. Of course the temperature is high for this cycle (157 degrees F) so it will cost you more to run than the cooler cycles. The accompanying Maytag Performance Series Front Load Dryer is also available in Crimson. The capacity is 7.2 cubic feet and the price is $1,199.00, $100 more than the white version. A gas version is sold for $1269.

GE sells two shades of red washer and dryers. The GE Profile Washer is available in Vermillion Red. It is Energy Star qualified and has a capacity of 4.2 cubic feet. Other features include a system that lets it communicate with the dryer. Using this system, the dryer can prepare its drying cycles. The washer has space for six months of detergent to gradually dispense with each load. Its companion appliance is the GE Profile Dryer which has a capacity of 7.5 cubic feet. The GE Profile Dryer is available in electric and gas.

The GE Energy Star 4.0 Cubic Foot Washer is front loading and available in Metallic Red. It is Energy Star Rated and available for $1069. The matching GE Metallic Red Dryer has a capacity of 7 cubic feet and retails for $969.

The products above are listed on manufacturers' websites. However, it also worth considering buying from retailers where you may be able to get a better deal on appliances that aren't from this year's line or which may not be coordinated models. For instance, Best Buy sells a Samsung washer in Red that is not listed on the Samsung website. The Samsung 13 cycle washer in Tango Red is sold at Best Buy for $1259.99. An accompanying Red dryer is the LG 7.3 Cubic Foot Steam Dryer in Cherry Red for $1299.99 at Best Buy.
